Backpacking in Skagit County

Peak Pursuits Backpacking in Skagit County helps youth build grounded confidence, leadership, and wilderness ethics through safe, coached backcountry experiences—from day hikes to overnights.

Backpacking is where Peak Pursuits began—and where our operational standards, safety culture, and philosophy were first tested. When young people are trusted with real responsibility, supported well, and taught to move thoughtfully through wild places, they grow grounded, capable, and deeply connected to place.

Our proving ground

Backpacking was our “soft opening.” Early trips were intentionally small—short overnights with youth we already knew well. That gave us the right environment to pilot procedures, field decision-making, and leadership coaching with conservative standards.

Real experience, handled well

On one overnight trip, our group encountered a bear. The outcome mattered—not because it was dramatic, but because it was calm. Students responded exactly as trained: awareness, communication, and good judgment.

A progression that honors readiness

We scale intentionally—from day hikes to overnights and, when readiness aligns, extended trips:

  • Day hikes: navigation basics, pacing, food systems, trail awareness
  • Light backpacking: short mileage, shared meals, camp setup
  • Overnights: self-management, group responsibility, weather decisions
  • Extended trips: multi-day routes and destination experiences

Why This Matters

Backpacking strips life down to what matters: preparation, teamwork, humility, and respect for place. It builds resilience without bravado, confidence without ego, and connection without spectacle.

Grounded confidence

Students learn they can manage discomfort, uncertainty, and responsibility—and finish well.

Stewardship through experience

Leave No Trace becomes personal when you live it—not just hear about it.

Leadership that lasts

Backpacking teaches leadership that shows up quietly—and holds when it counts.
